The plan is for the community garden to be expanded as soon as possible. The Charity are actively planning the second stage of the community garden expansion, currently in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals and securing funding to proceed with this important development.
The expansion has taken longer than anticipated as the Committee were conscious that during the planning process, it was necessary to take into consideration all the learnings gained from the first stage of the community garden, and how the space has been utilised by the community.
The expansion aims to enhance Stage 1 and the garden’s role as a welcoming space that supports mental health and reduces isolation within the community. Supporting all the current programs and partnerships we currently have, and plan to bring on board within the coming years.
We welcome input from local residents and visitors—if you have ideas or a vision for what Stage 2 could include, please contact us directly. Your feedback is valuable in helping us create a community garden that best serves the needs and wellbeing of everyone who benefits from the space.
Our Charity warmly encourage residents to enjoy the fresh produce grown in our community garden as part of our mission to promote connection and well-being. We ask that those who wish to pick produce become financial members of the garden, supporting its upkeep and growth.
Membership is affordable and inclusive—just $15 for individuals, $25 for families, or $30 for schools and organisations annually. Memberships can be obtained here.(https://www.padburycommunitygarden.org/membership)
While joining as a member helps sustain the garden, we operate on an honour system, trusting everyone to respect the space and each other.
All people who frequent the garden are kindly requested to be respectful while in the garden, ensuring the space remains welcoming and productive for everyone. This approach aligns with Padbury’s mission of fostering community connection and wellbeing, through shared responsibility and care.
While the land on which the Padbury Community Garden is located is vested with the City of Joondalup for management by the State Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, the land is allowed to be used by our Charity under a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City. This agreement grants the Charity permission to use the land for a specified period, subject to conditions agreed upon by the two parties.
The City of Joondalup supports the garden by providing essential resources such as water (unless misused) and necessary approvals. This collaboration has enabled our Charity to establish a beautiful and inclusive community space that fosters social connection and improves mental health, aligned with our mission to reduce isolation within the local area. The City offer grants which the Charity can apply for in a openly competitive  for grants offered by The City, which provides funding opportunities through an openly competitive process. These grants are available to
The community garden is run by our Charity, via the dedication, collaboration, and creativity of its volunteer Committee and specialised Teams. Together, these groups help the Charity function and grow, meet the statutory and government requirements, plan for the future, nurture a welcoming space where gardening, learning, culture, sustainability, and community connection flourish. Each team plays a vital role in planning activities, supporting volunteers, partnering with local organisations, caring for the garden, creating opportunities for people of all ages to grow, share knowledge, and enjoy the benefits of a vibrant community garden, and obtain approvals and funding to enable all of this to occur.
Our Grants and Funding Team actively seek funding opportunities to expand its impactful programs, and one key resource is the City of Joondalup’s Community Funding Program. This funding is offered through an openly competitive process, meaning we can apply alongside other community groups within the City of Joondalup local government area, demonstrating the strength and uniqueness of our initiatives. Securing this funding opportunity, along side other funding opportunities, enables our Charity to enhance community outreach, develop new initiatives to support mental health in our community, and deliver activities that combat isolation.
Thank you for visiting the Padbury garden and your interest in learning more about our plantings! The community garden is a vital part of our Charity's efforts to foster community well-being and mental health. As a solely volunteer-run organisation, much of our work happens behind the scenes. One of our exciting plans is to add informative and educational labels throughout the garden, clearly indicating what is growing where. These labels will help visitors connect with the plants and enhance the overall experience.
In the meantime, if you would like specific information about any plants during your visit, please feel free to take a photo and email it to us. Our team will be happy to provide you with details and answer any questions you have.
Alternatively we would love you to attend one of our Sunday morning Garden Gatherings which are held on a fortnightly basis, where there is always a Committee member and the Garden Bed Planning Team in attendance, who will be ever so keen to give you a detailed tour.
We’re enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and happy to provide the information you need as we work toward completing the signage. Your support helps us continue improving the garden as a welcoming space for mental health and community connection.
Yes, dogs are very welcome.
We kindly ask that you ensure that you keep your dogs on a leash whilst in the community garden and clean up after them. We are finding a lot of people letting their dogs roam the garden on their own, and as a result we are stumbling across a lot of unwanted presents left around the garden. In addition, we often have volunteers in the garden who are not necessarily comfortable with dogs jumping up on them, so please be respectful of others and keep your furbabies under control, so everyone can feel safe to be in the space created by the community for the community.
Please respect the garden and be prepared by bringing your our bags to clean up after your dogs. Alternatively, the City has bags available near the playground at Gibson Park. Our Charity has been fortunate to have been donated a bag dispenser by Woodlands Distributors, however, it is not always filled due to it not being the City asset.

The community garden is open to everyone, regardless of age, gender, sex, cultural background, ethnicity, religious belief or ability.
We are learning together and we are passionate about creating a safe space for all.
The garden is wheelchair accessible, with specially designed pathways and raised garden beds for safe and easy access for people with mobility difficulties.
For the safety of children, they do need to be supervised by an adult whilst in the garden. They also get the most benefit from being within the community garden when they have an adult with them to help navigate all the exciting things within the space.
Whilst you are at the community garden, there is a universal access toilet (UAT) located next to the playground and pump track within the Gibson Park, when you look on the diagonal through the urban drain (indicated by the solid yellow arrow). There are two ways to access the UAT from the community garden (indicated by the yellow dotted lines). Neither ways to access the UAT are completely accessible via a solid pathway, however the passage via Gibson Avenue is the most accessible as it is mostly solid pathways, and more solid grass with no steps to have to contend with.

For events, the Charity typically hires the Gibson Park Community Hall, which includes a disabled toilet complying with the 2011 Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards; however, please note that this facility does not have a hoist.
Our Charity are committed to supporting community inclusion and mental health by providing accessible environments, and we recommend contacting us in advance to discuss any specific accessibility needs you may have.
We’re thrilled that you want to get involved with the Padbury Community Garden! As the Padbury Community Garden is situated within a public space, our Charity operates under an agreement with the local government that requires us to obtain approval for any plantings in the garden beds directly on the ground. This helps us ensure that all plants contribute positively to the environment and are publicly safe to ensure community wellbeing.
Although the Charity have received a blanket approval for rotational seasonal plantings within the raised garden beds, the Garden Bed Planning Team carefully plan and monitor plantings over the years, for the season ahead, to enable the garden to constantly improve over the years.
While we encourage community involvement, any proposed plants must align with these guidelines and receive approval through the Committee prior to any plantings taking place. The Committee may have already received approval for the planting you have in mind, however, they may need to obtain approval from the City.
This process, although it sounds complex, helps maintain a safe and healthy environment for all participants, and preserves the garden’s role in continuing to maintain sustainable, functional and improving for years to come.
